The Angel in the Road
In the fall of 1990, our sons Michael Lee, six years old, and Justin Ross, four, were riding in the backseat of our car. I had just picked them up from after-school care. We all were tired and anxious to get home for dinner. My mind was focused on what I was going to fix, or maybe we should just stop and pick up takeout from Baker's.
All of a sudden, this car came out of nowhere and swerved directly toward us. My knuckles grasped the steering wheel tight as I prepared for impact. Then our car came to a screeching halt, and we were planted safely up against the curb.
I turned around, looked in the backseat, all shaken with tears, and asked our sons, “Are you both okay?”
Michael said to me, “Yes, Mom — but did you see that angel in the road? She just spread her big wings and pushed those two cars apart.”
I just sat there speechless, and then I said, “No, honey, I did not see the angel.”
They say that children often show a natural openness to the spiritual world, because they live in the present moment, without adult skepticism or world distractions.
I can only tell you: I believed our sons' unprompted description of what happened, and I was so thankful for our guardian angel that day.
